BJJ Classes Can Be Started At Any Age

“Age is but a number”.  A phrase most of us have heard but do we really believe it and is it even true? It’s undeniable that our bodies undergo a good deal of wear and tear over the years and inevitably we will find ourselves not able to do all the things we once could in our 20’s. Understandably, this process can be a difficult one to take. However, it shouldn’t discourage you from pushing to keep yourself mentally and physically fit. The discipline, focus and self-respect that BJJ classes promote make it the perfect physical activity for adults — and you can start at any age.

A lot of workouts can feel like just that; work. The good news is martial arts do not fall into that category. BJJ classes are often structured to push students while also keeping them motivated to continue returning. Additionally, an emphasis is often placed on respect for one’s self and body. This is great for adults who want to stay fit but also need an environment that understands and works with their physical limitations. Students will find that a martial arts workout will also help you gain flexibility and remain agile leaving you less prone to injures and accidents.

When you’re rolling in BJJ class you will need to pull from your memory bank countless combinations and moves that you’ve learned over time. Unfortunately the aging process can make this task more challenging. But working out your brain just like you do for your body will not only help you stay sharp in your training but also in your life as a whole. Plus an added bonus! Proper exercise has been shown to relieve stress and helps you sleep better at night!

As an adult, it can be challenging to find new communities or expand your social circle. Martial arts create a strong bonded and welcoming community. While in class you will work very closely with other students and form friendships through the ups and downs of your training together. Passionate instructors will also be sure they to get to know and understand their students and their journeys. Consequently, the environment created is both welcoming and accepting to those of all ages and from all walks of life.

As an adult, it is understandable to feel hesitation towards starting something new. We often become comfortable with our routines and rarely venture out. But don’t let age stop you from trying something you are interested in! A good amount of exercise is important at every age and martial arts might just be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding ways to do it.
