Summer Camp: What to Consider When Choosing the Right One

January 24th, 2017 by Crystal Carlton

I remember signing up for summer camp as a kid. There were so many things to choose from and only a short time to decide before they all filled up. This was more stressful for my mother than it was for me. I was just excited to be thinking about the summer. No matter if you are choosing a swim class, karate classes, or a day camp it is important to choose one that will hold interest all summer long.

You can choose from multiple activities throughout the summer or you can pick a day camp that will do that for you. There are a lot of benefits of choosing one summer camp over multiple separate activities.

Knowing Your Schedule

Most camps have a set itinerary so that you do not need to worry. You will know where your child is at every moment during the day and what activities and trips they will be participating in. With a day camp, you are assured that your child will have multiple things to choose from over the summer. They will get outside to play games and go on field trips. There is generally academic time set aside so that they have the chance to sit and read or work on any summer assignments they may have.

Summer Camp can be fun and Safe

By far I think the most important thing that should be considered is the instructors that will be with your child every day. Almost every camp can guarantee you fun and games. The instructors are there to make sure you children are having fun, but most importantly they are there to make sure your child is having fun in a safe environment. Great instructors are able to balance fun and safety so that nothing is being compromised.

Don’t be hesitant to ask your child’s instructors questions. They know a lot about the program and will be happy to give you information.

Camp Builds Confidence

Camp can be a great way to spend a summer as well as build confidence  As a camp counselor it was amazing seeing the campers learning new things for the first time. They would often seem unsure but once they realized they could do it they were happy to help other campers learn just as they did. I think this is the most rewarding thing about camp.

Affordable Summer Camp

Many camps offer discounts for registering early! For instance, we at Modern Martial Arts offer up to 35% off when you register early for summer camp. Make sure you take advantage of any deals or promos that are offered.

While summer may seem far away, remember that camp can have a positive influence in your child’s life. It is a safe place for them to have fun and learn something new.

  1. My son was telling me that he wanted to go to a summer camp this year, and I was curious about how you would choose the right one. It’s interesting that you say to make sure that they camp has great instructors to keep your kid safe. Since we don’t want him getting hurt while he is there, it would be nice to see that they have hired good people.

    1. Hey Frank, thanks for writing! My number one recommendation is to find a way to meet the instructors ahead of time. For us, we encourage students to come in and do a free trial karate class with us so that parents can see how their child interacts with our instructors ahead of time, even if they’re just planning to do camp and not karate classes. This way you know the space your child will be in, and you know who they’ll be with. Let us know if you have other questions!
